New Firefox browser blocks hacked websites

A new version of the popular Firefox web browser could help to end the recent spate of infections caused by visiting hacked websites.

Firefox 3, currently available as a pre-release beta version, uses an anti-malware feature that works using a blacklist of known hacked sites; it will refuse to open such a site if the user tries to visit it. The list used by Firefox 3 is generated by the Stopbadware initiative led by Harvard Law and Oxford University, and is updated every 30 minutes.

Sun Bringing Java to iPhone

Sun announced that they are developing a Java Virtual Machine for Apple’s iPhone with the newly released Software Development Kit (SDK).

“We’re going to make sure that the JVM offers the Java applications as much access to the native functionality of the iPhone as possible,” he said.

The specific version of Java will be based on the Java Micro Edition (ME) and will open the iPhone to a large library of existing Java applications. Sun’s announcement comes after reviewing the iPhone SDK since its release just on Thursday. Sun expects to release this version of Java “some time after June”.

True full screen for Firefox 3

Recent Firefox 3 nightlies finally offer true full screen mode. In Firefox 2 (and previous Firefox 3 betas including beta 4) when you press F11 or select Full Screen from the View menu, Firefox expands to use all the screen but still shows the navigation and tab bars. To effectively use all available screen state you need an extension like FullerScreen.

IE 5.5 Beats IE6 and IE7 On Acid 3

Steven Noonan sends us to a page where he is collecting and updating results for various browsers on the newly released Acid 3 test. No browser yet scores 100 on this test. (We discussed Acid 3 when it came out.) He writes, “It’s not surprising that Internet Explorer is losing to every other modern browser, but how did IE 5.5 beat IE 6.0 and 7.0?” All of the IE versions score below 20 on Acid 3.
